The market
What Makes Energy Search Different?
Energy search is driven by price, moves with the wholesale market, and is dominated by a few very large comparison brands.
Most searches come down to one question: what will it cost me? That makes content date quickly. A page quoting last quarter’s rates is worse than no page at all, to customers and to search engines.
Demand also arrives in waves. Business customers search hardest in the window before a contract ends, and news about prices sends everyone looking at once. Domestic and business energy behave as two separate markets, with different rules, different customers and different searches.
The large comparison sites hold the broadest terms. The opening for everyone else lies in being more specific: by business type, by meter, by region and by the questions the big sites answer badly.
The challenges
What Holds Energy Brands Back in Search?
Four problems come up again and again in energy, and each has a practical answer.
- 01
Content goes out of date
Rates, caps and tariffs change, and stale figures destroy trust.
What we doWe build pages around data that can be refreshed, and show the date and source of every figure.
- 02
Household names own the head terms
Competing head-on for ‘compare energy’ is a contest of budgets.
What we doWe target the segments they neglect: specific industries, meter types and business sizes.
- 03
Customers do not trust brokers
Buyers worry about hidden commission and pushy sales.
What we doWe make how you work, who you compare and how you are paid plain on the page.
- 04
Traffic that does not convert
Informational visitors read and leave.
What we doWe connect guides to quote journeys, and build pages for the renewal window when intent is highest.

What Do Energy Customers Search For?
Energy searches fall into four stages, and each needs a different kind of page.
| Stage | Example searches | The page that wins |
|---|---|---|
| Learning | what is a standing charge, how are business rates calculated | A clear guide with a direct answer and current figures |
| Comparing | best business energy suppliers, fixed or variable tariff | A comparison page with evidence and dates |
| Ready to switch | compare business electricity prices, business gas quote | A quote page that gets to prices quickly |
| Specialist | energy for pubs, half hourly meter rates, multi-site energy | A dedicated page for that business type or meter |

What Does a Trustworthy Energy Page Show?
It shows current prices with a date and a source, and is open about who is being compared and how the service is paid.
Search engines and AI engines look for the same signals a cautious customer would. On an energy page, these six do most of the work.
- 1Current figuresPrices and rates with the date they were checked.
- 2A named sourceWhere each figure comes from.
- 3Who is comparedThe suppliers on your panel, stated openly.
- 4How you are paidCommission or fees explained in plain terms.
- 5A named expertWho wrote or reviewed the page.
- 6A clear route to a quoteWhat happens next, and how long it takes.
The rules
What Rules Shape Energy Content?
Energy is regulated by Ofgem, and how prices and savings are presented matters.
- Ofgem regulates suppliers, and sets rules that affect how brokers deal with smaller businesses.
- The energy price cap applies to domestic customers, not to business contracts, and content must not blur the two.
- Savings claims need to be substantiated and dated, in line with advertising rules.
- Customers expect to be told how a broker or comparison service is paid.
We write with these rules in mind. We are not a law firm, and compliance sign-off stays with you.
AI search
How Is AI Changing Energy Search?
Buyers now ask AI engines which suppliers and brokers to consider, and get a shortlist before they visit any website.
Engines favour sources with clear, current pricing information and an established reputation. A broker with accurate, dated content and coverage in trusted publications is far more likely to be named than one with a thin site.
An AI visibility audit shows which energy questions mention you today, and who is recommended in your place.

FAQs
SEO for energy: your questions answered
Do you have experience in the energy sector?
Yes. We co-own Business Energy UK, a business energy comparison brand, which we built from nothing and took to profitability within six months of launch.
Can a smaller broker compete with the big comparison sites?
Not for the broadest terms, and it does not need to. Smaller brokers win by owning specific segments: particular industries, meter types, regions and business sizes.
How do you keep energy content up to date?
We structure pages so figures can be refreshed without rewriting them, and show the date and source of each one.
Do you work with domestic energy brands as well as business energy?
Yes. They are separate markets with different rules and searches, and we plan them separately.
Will you make sure our content is compliant?
We write with Ofgem’s rules and advertising standards in mind, but we are not a law firm. Final compliance sign-off stays with you.
